Making Zu Earn Her Keep, #StreamTeam Edition.

As a member of Netflix’s Stream Team, I get to devour TV and movies at an alarming rate- and share my absolute favorites with you. While I’m frequently compensated, all thoughts and opinions and binge-watching sessions are strictly my own.

Especially in light of the month (and year) I’ve had so far, it’s nice to know that Netflix loves me. And loves my children. And they love Netflix back. A lot. Ooh whee, do they love Netflix back a lot.

But it’s not just afternoon-filler or a patented babysitting device (not more than once a week, anyhow); I take solace in the fact that the thoughtfully curated programming is the kind of stuff that I’d be enjoying and talking about with my kids. You know, if I weren’t face-planting into the alphabet play mat this week. Which I am.

Digression.

This month’s theme is Create Your Own Destiny- something which I do manage to hammer into my daughters’ heads on a near-hourly basis. (I’m easing up on Jasper for at least a couple more months. I’ll let him feel solid on that whole “balance” thing before I start pummeling him with conversations about societal gender constructs and always, always, always following his happiness.) That said, I’m gonna let Zu take the reins on this theme because Octonauts, one of the featured shows, is her current raison d’être. And what’s not to love? A team of underwater explorers- with a gaggle of deep sea vehicles and pods and devices- in an adorably animated show that looks a lot like Star Trek meets Jacques Cousteau meets my three year-old’s adoration. But I’ll let her explain why.

K: Susannah, why do you like Octonauts?

S: ‘Cause I really love them. I love watching shows about them. There’s nothing else to tell.

K: Who’s your favorite character?

S: Peso [the penguin]. He whips bandaids around when any creature is hurt or sick. (Edit. note: Must fact check this one.)

K: What else does he do?

S: Nothing else.

K: Why do they like exploring the ocean so much?

S: Because they’re Octonauts.

K: What’s the silliest thing they’ve ever discovered?

S: The white squid that scares Peso and Razzy (Edit. note: I think she means Kwazii, the cat. However, Razzy is a great name.) They’re really little people. He was just misunderstood.

K: Which episode is your favorite?

S: The one with the red squid. It’s different than the white squid. It’s the little red one.

K: Do you think the Octonauts are good sharers?

S: Mmm hmm.

K: Do they listen to their Moms?

S: Mmm hmm. But they don’t have Mommies.

K: No?

S: No, they listen to their brother, Captain Barnacles. I like Captain Barnacles best. (Edit. note: I hope we stay in this “everyone must be a sibling” phase forever.)

K: Better than Peso?

S: Mmm hmm.

K: What else do you think they’re good at?

S: Just swimming.

K: Can you sing the Creature Report song for me? That’s so cute.

S: No, not right now.
